The society was formed in 1991, when the societies of Boland S.A. Rugby Board and Boland S.A. Rugby Union united under the new dispensation. The first executive committee was formed by a combination of members from the two societies.
Some of our goals as a Society include improving referees’ knowledge on the laws as a whole, to have our referees assessed during matches, and to get the coaches to make corrections on referee performances, as seen in performance reports to improve the standard of refereeing.

The Golden Lions Rugby Referees Society was founded in 1904 and was then known as the Transvaal Referees Association. It has over the years produced various capable referees who have made names for themselves in the respective levels of officiating. The referee administrators have also contributed to the refereeing network and international fraternity.
The Society’s motto is “Where high quality refereeing is a standard”. It upholds this by contributing to the supply of refereeing services at all levels required by its provincial union and national body.
