Clip 3 – 16 October 2018 - Law 11

Blue Bulls kick, Dillyn Leyds of Western Province counters. He is stopped but the ball comes back to Herschel Jantjies who passes on the left to Dan Kriel.

The ball does not reach Kriel as Duncan Matthews knocks it on. The referee penalises Matthews for a deliberate knock-on, saying: "He takes the risk. If he doesn't gather it, it's a penalty."

The replay shows that Matthews did knock the ball on, but he had both hands up and certainly gave the impression of trying to catch the ball with the hope of a profitable intercept.

Deliberate surely would be the act of knocking the ball way with the hand or hands without any genuine attempt to catch the ball and not determined by not regathering the ball.

Law 11.3: A player must not intentionally knock the ball forward with hand or arm. Sanction: Penalty. advert
